Darryl Hollenbeck is one of the greatest car painters in the world. But don't take our word for it. Just check out his work. It's magnificent. It's stunning. It's breathtaking. It's indescribable. There are many fine painters out there. The talent in the industry today is amazing. And Darryl Hollenbeck is right at the top of list among the best in the business today.

"It's the attention to detail kind of thing," Darryl says of his shop Vintage Color Studio in Oakland, Calif. "We like to take a car that's nothing, and making it spectacular. We do show jobs. We do high-quality work."

And he wins awards. The most recent being the 2014 Mother's Custom of the Year Award at the Goodguys Rod & Custom Association 32nd All American Get-Together in Pleasanton, Calif, for his work on "The Black Pearl," a ground-up custom creation for James Hetfield of Metallica and Rick Dore. The Black Pearl is so striking that in addition to earning the Goodguys award, the car won the Sam Barris award and the Custom d'Elegance at the Sacramento Autorama. He's also earned honors such as two of America's Most Beautiful Roadster awards, the most recent at the 2013 Grand National Roadster Show in Pomona, Calif

Hollenbeck is world renown for his custom cars. He focuses on classic cars from the 1930s, '40s, and '50s. He's a third-generation painter following in his father's and grandfather's traditions.

Darryl began his career working in his uncle's autobody shop in high school. He says he was lucky to have family friends like Art Himsl to show him the way. Especially has hard as the industry used to be to break into.

"Back then, people wouldn't give you the time of day," he recalls. "People didn't give up their secrets."

But thankfully, they did. And 25 years later, Darryl is considered a living legend in vintage cars.
